Blockstream has announced Jade Core, the newest addition to its hardware wallet lineup, aimed at making Bitcoin self-custody as straightforward as possible for everyday users.
The device is designed for people who have been keeping their bitcoin on exchanges and want a simple, secure way to take personal control of their funds.
What jade core offers
Jade Core connects via USB-C and pairs with the Blockstream app on desktop, iOS, and Android over Bluetooth.
A vibrant display lets users verify every send and receive address before confirming a transaction, and all signing happens on the device itself — never on a connected phone or computer.
Setup takes only minutes, and users are given a 12-word recovery phrase during first-time configuration, which serves as a permanent backup even if the device is lost or damaged.
Security model
Jade Core uses the same open-source security architecture found in the Jade Plus.
Its Blind Oracle PIN Protection splits wallet access between the user’s PIN, the device itself, and a remote blind oracle server that never sees or stores user data — meaning even a physically compromised device cannot expose funds.
Users who prefer not to rely on a third-party server can run their own blind oracle.
A Genuine Check feature also lets buyers verify their device came directly from Blockstream during setup, guarding against counterfeit hardware.
Every component — hardware, firmware, and security model — is fully open source.
Why self-custody matters
Blockstream points to the risks of leaving bitcoin on exchanges, noting that platforms can freeze withdrawals, suffer losses, or shut down without warning.
As the Blockstream team put it:
“With Jade Core, your bitcoin belongs to you and you alone.”
