How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Your Annual Income: This determines whether your gains are taxed at the basic rate (10%) or higher rate (20%).
- Provide Cost Basis & Sale Amount: Enter what you paid for the crypto and what you sold it for, both in GBP.
- View Results: The calculator auto-updates as you type. You'll see your capital gain, tax-free allowance used, taxable gain, and estimated CGT.
How It's Calculated
- Your capital gain is the sale amount minus your cost basis.
- The first £3,000 of gains per tax year is tax-free (the Annual Exempt Amount for 2024-25).
- Gains above the allowance are taxed at 10% (basic rate) if your total income is under £50,270, or 20% (higher/additional rate) above that threshold.
- If your gains straddle the basic-rate limit, the portion within it is taxed at 10% and the rest at 20%.
- Capital losses can be reported to HMRC and carried forward to offset future gains.
