6 Best Crypto Payment Gateways [2026]
Merchant checkout APIs, plugins, and invoices — picked by job, not as one generic winner.
There's no single "crypto payment gateway." Some take 300+ coins and settle you in USDT. Some only take Bitcoin. Some convert to dollars. Some are a plugin on the Stripe account you already have.
Picking the wrong type is painful. Stripe won't take bitcoin, BTCPay won't cash you out to a bank, and ChangeNOW is a swap API, not checkout. I've organized this list by job.
Key Takeaways
- NOWPayments is the best crypto payment gateway. It lets you take hundreds of coins through an API, plugins, payment links, or a widget, without running your own node.
- Zaprite is best if you only want Bitcoin, BTCPay if you want to self-host Lightning, and OpenNode if you want to convert some of those bitcoin payments to fiat.
- Stripe is for stablecoins on a card stack you already have. BitPay is the one for in-person POS and email invoices.
- Expert advice from Bitbo's CEO: these are gateways I've either used myself or would use. This isn't a scraped vendor list.

The 6 Best Crypto Payment Gateways
Here's each pick and what it's best at.
NOWPayments →
Product Hosted crypto checkout: API, plugins, payment links, and widgets. 350+ coins, auto-conversion, mass payouts.
Pricing 0.5% for same-asset payments. 1% when they convert (0.5% + 0.5% exchange). Integration is free.
Best for Stores and apps that want many coins without running a node or an order book.
NOWPayments is the payment-gateway product from the ChangeNOW team. Your customer pays in whatever coin they have; you take it as that coin or convert it to something you actually want to hold. They cover 350+ assets, plus plugins, payment links, and a widget if you don't want to write API code.
The fee is 0.5% when the customer pays in the same asset you settle in, and 1% when there's a conversion. Payouts to your wallet have no service fee, just network fees. You get an API key from the dashboard after you sign up at nowpayments.io. Typical flow: create a payment with POST https://api.nowpayments.io/v1/payment and an x-api-key header, then listen for IPN callbacks.
One thing to know: new accounts are custodial by default. Funds land in a NOWPayments balance until you withdraw. You can add a payout wallet and turn custody off if you want coins to go straight out. Don't treat it as BTCPay. And don't mix it up with ChangeNOW — that's a swap API, not checkout.
Zaprite →
Product Bitcoin invoices, payment links, and checkout. On-chain, Lightning, and optional card/fiat in one flow. No other cryptocurrencies.
Pricing $25/mo or $240/year. Invoices and payment links don't take an extra cut. API and WooCommerce are 1% (capped at $15).
Best for Businesses that want to get paid in bitcoin and keep it, without running a server.
Zaprite is bitcoin-only, and they mean it — no altcoins, ever. Payments go to a wallet you connect (self-custody or custodial, on-chain or Lightning). They never take possession of the coins. There's also a card/fiat option in the same checkout if you still have customers who won't pay in BTC.
You pay a subscription, not a processor spread on invoices. Monthly is $25, yearly is $240, with a 30-day trial. That account fee credits against transaction fees. API and WooCommerce pulls are 1% with a $15 cap. Sign up at app.zaprite.com.
If you want 300 coins, that's NOWPayments. If you want to self-host Lightning and pay $0, that's BTCPay.
BTCPay Server →
Product Open-source, self-hosted Bitcoin and Lightning checkout. Greenfield REST API, apps, and plugins. No account at a processor.
Pricing $0 gateway fee. You pay for a VPS (or a host like LunaNode) and Lightning liquidity.
Best for People who want Lightning, full custody, and are willing to run software.
BTCPay is the self-hosted option. There's no company taking a cut of your sales. You run the server, you hold the keys, and you get a proper Lightning stack plus on-chain Bitcoin. The Greenfield API is how you create invoices from your own app.
The cost is time and hosting, not a 1% processor fee. That's the whole pitch. If you don't want to babysit a node, use Zaprite or OpenNode.
It will not convert bitcoin to dollars for you. For that, use OpenNode or BitPay.
OpenNode →
Product Bitcoin and Lightning processing with optional conversion to local currency and bank payouts. Shopify and a REST API.
Pricing Typical processing is 1%. No monthly fee. Conversion itself is free. Instant on-chain withdrawals are 1%; Lightning withdrawals are free.
Best for Taking bitcoin and cashing some or all of it out to a bank.
OpenNode is Bitcoin-only, like Zaprite, but the job is different: you can keep the BTC or convert some (or all) of each payment to USD, EUR, GBP, and a few others, then send it to a bank. Conversion doesn't add a second fee on top of processing. Lightning is first-class.
Expect about 1% per payment, KYC if you want fiat, and a custodial balance until you withdraw. Scheduled BTC withdrawals are free; instant on-chain is 1%; Lightning out is free.
Don't use this if you want altcoins (NOWPayments) or if you refuse to let anyone else hold the coins (BTCPay or Zaprite).
Stripe →
Product Stablecoin checkout inside Stripe Checkout, Payment Links, and Elements. USDC (and some USDP/USDG). Settles to your Stripe balance, not a bitcoin wallet.
Pricing 1.5% standard. Stripe has run a 0.8% promo through January 1, 2027. $10,000 cap per payment.
Best for US (and some other) businesses already on Stripe that only need stablecoins, not bitcoin.
This is not a bitcoin gateway. Customers pay in USDC (Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Base, Tempo) and a couple of other dollar stables. Stripe converts it and drops USD into the same balance as your card sales. You turn it on in the Dashboard; Checkout can show it next to cards.
Standard pricing is 1.5%. There's a 0.8% promo through the start of 2027. Refunds go back as stablecoins to the customer's wallet. No chargebacks. $10k max per transaction.
If you need bitcoin, use one of the others. If you're already on Stripe and just want USDC at checkout, this is the least work.
BitPay →
Product Online invoices, email billing, in-person POS, and bank settlement. QuickBooks. Custodial, KYC, money-transmitter stack.
Pricing 2% + $0.25 under $500k/month, 1.5% + $0.25 up to $1M, 1% + $0.25 above that.
Best for Retail counters, emailed invoices, and teams that need a name accounting already knows.
BitPay is the old brand. That's useful when you need in-person acceptance, email invoices, payroll-style payouts, or a QuickBooks export — not when you want the lowest fee or to hold your own keys.
Fees are 1–2% plus $0.25 per invoice, based on monthly volume. Settlement can be fiat to a bank, crypto, or a mix. Lightning works without extra setup. KYC is not optional.
OpenNode is cheaper if you only need bitcoin-to-bank. NOWPayments is cheaper if you need lots of coins online. BitPay wins the boring enterprise checkout: POS, invoices, and a compliance department.
Types of Crypto Payment Gateways
Most roundups treat these like they're interchangeable. They're not:
- Multi-coin hosted checkout — NOWPayments. Many assets, API, plugins, optional conversion.
- Bitcoin-only, keep the coins — Zaprite. Invoices and links to your wallet. No altcoins.
- Self-hosted Lightning — BTCPay Server. $0 processor fee, you run it.
- Bitcoin in, fiat out — OpenNode. Convert some or all of each payment to a bank.
- Stablecoins on a card processor — Stripe. USDC, not bitcoin.
- POS / invoices / payroll brand — BitPay. Custodial, KYC, higher fees.
- Swap APIs — ChangeNOW. That's a different article. Not merchant checkout.
How to Choose a Crypto Payment Gateway
- Custody. BTCPay and Zaprite keep keys out of the processor. NOWPayments is custodial by default (you can switch). OpenNode, Stripe, and BitPay hold funds until payout.
- Bitcoin vs everything else. Zaprite, BTCPay, and OpenNode are bitcoin (and Lightning). NOWPayments is hundreds of coins. Stripe is stablecoins only.
- Do you need dollars? OpenNode or BitPay. BTCPay will not wire you USD.
- Lightning. BTCPay if you'll run channels. OpenNode or Zaprite if you want Lightning without the node ops.
- Already on Stripe? Turn on stablecoins. Don't bolt on a second bitcoin processor unless you actually need BTC.
The three mistakes I see most often: using Stripe when you meant bitcoin, using BTCPay when you needed a bank payout, and using ChangeNOW as a checkout page.
FAQ
Is there one best crypto payment gateway?
No. NOWPayments for multi-coin checkout, Zaprite for bitcoin-only, BTCPay to self-host Lightning, OpenNode to convert BTC to fiat, Stripe if you already take cards and only need stablecoins, BitPay for POS and invoices.
Is ChangeNOW a payment gateway?
No. ChangeNOW is a swap API. NOWPayments is the checkout product from the same team. See our crypto APIs list for ChangeNOW.
Is NOWPayments non-custodial?
New accounts are custodial by default. You can add a payout wallet and disable custody so payments don't sit on their balance. Confirm the current default in their dashboard — it has changed.
Zaprite vs BTCPay Server?
Zaprite if you want invoices without running a server. BTCPay if you want Lightning, $0 processor fees, and you're fine hosting it.
Does Stripe accept Bitcoin?
No. Stripe's crypto checkout is stablecoins (mostly USDC), settled to your Stripe balance. For bitcoin, use NOWPayments, Zaprite, BTCPay, OpenNode, or BitPay.
What happened to Coinbase Commerce?
Coinbase shut the Commerce merchant portal on March 31, 2026. The replacement is Coinbase Business, which is narrower (US/Singapore, stablecoin-focused, custodial). I wouldn't plan a new store on Commerce.
Methodology
I run Bitbo. Everything on this page was checked against the vendors' own docs in September 2026 — pricing, custody, Lightning, and region rules.
There's no single ranking from 1 to 6 here. Each pick is the best at its own job.
Disclaimer
We own Bitbo. Fees, custody defaults, and region rules change all the time, so confirm on the vendor's site before you ship. This isn't financial, legal, or investment advice.
