Key Takeaways
- Michael Saylor shared a false Trump quote about Bitcoin tax policy.
- The quote claimed Trump wanted Bitcoin tax-free, which he has not said.
- Saylor’s post spread quickly, misinforming several high-profile X accounts.
As U.S. Election Day approaches, misinformation is increasingly common across social media, impacting voters’ perceptions of candidates.
Michael Saylor, executive chair at MicroStrategy, recently contributed to the confusion by posting an inaccurate quote attributed to Donald Trump.
The tweet
On Oct. 30, Saylor shared with his 3.6 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) a statement wrongly claiming that Trump had said Bitcoin should be tax-free and called Bitcoin “money.”
Cointelegraph investigated and traced the original source of this fake quote to an X account, Basedkarbon, which on Oct. 28 falsely asserted Trump made the statement in an interview.
Good Morning Crypto, an account with 26,000 followers, also posted the quote before Saylor’s repost. Other prominent X accounts, including Kraken and Bitcoin Archive, subsequently treated the information as credible.
Basedkarbon, responding to Saylor’s post, commented:
The only reason things are true are because someone says something is true. The entire world is just people saying things and making them true.
Cointelegraph reached out to both Saylor and Trump’s campaign for comment, though no responses were received by publication.
