Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has acquired an additional 1,112 bitcoin, bringing its total holdings to 10,000 BTC and surpassing Coinbase Global, which currently holds 9,267 BTC according to Bitbo.

hares of Metaplanet surged over 17% following the news, trading at 1,769 yen as of 11:30 a.m. in Japan.

The company’s stock has now climbed more than 408% since the start of the year.

Bond issuance and future plans

Metaplanet’s board approved the issuance of $210 million in zero-interest bonds to EVO Fund, maturing December 12, 2025.

The company stated:

“The funds raised are scheduled to be allocated toward the purchase of Bitcoin.”

Earlier this month, Metaplanet set a revised target to hold over 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027, aiming for 1% of the total bitcoin supply.

To achieve this, the company announced a $5.4 billion equity offering on June 6, intending to issue 555 million shares over two years for further bitcoin acquisitions. On June 2, Metaplanet acquired another 1,088 BTC, pushing its holdings past 8,888 BTC at that time.

Global context

Metaplanet’s aggressive accumulation places it behind only Strategy, led by Michael Saylor, which remains the largest public holder with 582,000 BTC.
