Japanese investment firm Metaplanet has overtaken El Salvador in Bitcoin holdings, following a $129 million purchase on May 12 that brought its total stash to 6,796 BTC.
The Tokyo-listed firm paid 14.8 million yen — approximately $101,843 — per coin in its latest buy, its highest average purchase price to date.
At current market prices, Metaplanet’s holdings are worth around $707 million.
El Salvador, by comparison, holds 6,714 BTC valued at roughly $642 million, according to the country’s National Bitcoin Office.

Expansion of Bitcoin Strategy
Metaplanet has aggressively expanded its Bitcoin strategy in recent months.
In May alone, it bought 5,555 BTC prior to this latest acquisition.
April saw four separate buys totaling 18,586 BTC, while March included six purchases amounting to 18,925 BTC.
The firm began its Bitcoin accumulation strategy in April 2024.
Its current average purchase price stands at $91,000 per Bitcoin.
Bitcoin yield & global ranking
For the second quarter to date, it reports a Bitcoin Yield — the change in BTC holdings per fully diluted share — of 38%, following a 95.6% yield in Q1 2025.
Metaplanet is now Asia’s largest Bitcoin holder and ranks tenth globally, per BiTBO data.
