Japan-based Bitcoin investment firm Metaplanet has made its first Bitcoin purchase of 2025, acquiring 269 BTC for ¥4 billion ($26 million).
This latest acquisition pushes the firm’s total holdings to 2,031 BTC, valued at approximately $195 million.
CEO statement
Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich confirmed the purchase on Feb. 17, stating:
We have completed the first Bitcoin purchase of 2025. We believe this year will be an important one for our company. After a long break, we are glad to resume acquiring Bitcoin.
Expansion plans & funding
The firm bought Bitcoin at an average price of ¥12,243,936 ($80,674) per BTC.
Metaplanet has outlined ambitious expansion plans, aiming to accumulate 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and 21,000 BTC by 2026.
To fund these purchases, the company is raising ¥116 billion ($745 million) by issuing 21 million shares.
The shares will be available under a 0% discount moving strike warrant structure, allowing investors to buy at a fixed price based on the previous day’s closing stock price.

Gerovich also reported that Metaplanet has generated a 15.3% BTC yield since the start of 2025 and is targeting a quarterly yield of 35%.
