Coinbase has received approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to launch Coinbase Clearing LLC, its own derivatives clearinghouse.
A full derivatives stack
The CFTC approved the registration of Coinbase Clearing LLC on Sept. 28, making it the first clearinghouse built natively around USDC.
The new Derivatives Clearing Organization joins Coinbase Financial Markets, the company’s Futures Commission Merchant, and Coinbase Derivatives, its Designated Contract Market.
With all three pieces in place, Coinbase now has the end-to-end infrastructure to bring regulated derivatives products to market on its own.
The clearinghouse uses USDC as collateral and settles 24/7, a setup the company says is built for always-on markets.
What changes for Coinbase
For the first time, Coinbase can create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly.
The company said this means faster product development, more efficient operations, and the flexibility to launch new regulated products over time.
Existing partners will still support certain products, including its margined derivatives business and an upcoming launch of single stock perpetual futures.
Molly Abraham, general counsel at Coinbase, said in the announcement:
“Today’s CFTC approval completes Coinbase’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.”
Next steps
Coinbase described the approval as incremental progress toward expanding access to regulated products and building financial infrastructure for the onchain economy.
The company said it will work to strengthen the systems behind its current products while building a scalable foundation for future ones.
